Our speaker at the Annual General Meeting is Ken Parker, the proprietor of
Sweet Grass Gardens. He describes the nursery as a hobby that grew out of control.
As a homeowner, Ken was faced with the challenge of gardening in heavy clay and limestone.
The inability to obtain native plants locally inspired the creation of the Six Nations based retail nursery.
Owned and operated by Ken and Linda Parker, Sweet Grass Gardens opened its doors to
the public on May 15, 1996. The overwhelming interest in the nursery led to a feature spot
on HGTV's "The Gardeners Journal".
Over the past few years Sweet Grass Gardens has made a name for itself throughout Canada and the U.S. as a
leader in native plant knowledge. It is a small, family-run business hiring nursery staff
from within the Six Nations community.
Sweet Grass Gardens has also had the pleasure of training community members in horticulture
and landscaping for the Ogwehoweh Skills and Trades Training Centre in Ohsweken.
Linda and Ken had a lot of fun as guest landscapers in the W network's hit TV show
"The Gardening Gamble". They were fortunate to be able to incorporate many native plants in
their garden designs over the four years involved with the show.
Sweet Grass Gardens has taken the lead in promoting the use and benefits of native plants.
For more that 15 years Sweet Grass Gardens has been helping homeowners, schools, and more
recently corporate clients make healthy plant choices
The Ontario Regional Lily Society is sponsoring a Lily Judging School on
Saturday, March. 6th (parts 1 and 2) and Sunday, July 9th (part 3).

regional lily societies' members and others interested in becoming qualified lily judges. Please note
that those interested in becoming accredited judges with the North American Lily Society must
be/become members of N.A.L.S.
Ross Martin will be the official judge's training instructor, assisted by two
experienced judges,
Sandra-Pat Willis and Dr. Brian Bergman. In addition to new judging candidates, this course is
recommended to all existing student judges and accredited judges who wish to update their judging skills.
Existing judges are not required to write the two exams which will be offered at the end of each day's sessions.

should be purchased in advance from Maureen Barber, Registrar, 336 Sandlewood Road, Oakville, ON L6L 3R8.

Renowned botanist
Josef Halda
will speak about
"Rare Bulbs from Turkey to China"
Josef Halda
Like many of his
fellow Czech countrymen, Josef Halda traveled to the mountains at a very
early age, first with his grandfather, and immediately he was drawn to
the wonderful flowers. Encouraged by his family, he brought some home
to grow in a garden. By the age of 12 he had his own collection of
plants in his parents’ greenhouse. By age 16, he was corresponding with
Lawrence Crocker, a partner in Siskiyou Rare Plants in Medford, Oregon
and subsequently sent them cuttings of daphne arbuscula, a very hardy
evergreen daphne which grows only on the limestone cliffs of the Muran
Valley in Slovakia. This led to more correspondence with other growers
in both Western Europe and North America, one of those remarkable
occasions where gardening trumped politics, but it would be another 20
years before Josef would travel to America.
He and his wife, Jarmila, have
collected seed of new discoveries in Turkey, the Caucasus, Central Asia,
Siberia, West China and Upper Burma. Their Czech background has given
them better access to remote regions in states of the former Soviet
Union, where even now travel can be restricted at best, or worse,
dangerous. They have also researched and published monographs for primula,
gentiana, daphne, paeonia and androsace.
This is a wonderful
opportunity to be taken to another realm by one of the world’s great
field botanist and growers. Josef Halda will speak to members on the
topic of “Rare Bulbs from Turkey to China.”
The photos will portray both
plants we have never seen and natural habitats which can hardly
be described. From this vast region originate many of the hardy bulbs
grown in our gardens. There are many more that are yet uncultivated,
but may soon be here.
The meeting will start at 12:45 p.m. with the O.R.L.S. Annual General Membership Meeting,
with the featured speaker to follow by about 2:00 p.m.
The ORLS will hold a Fall Membership Meeting at 1:30
p.m. on November 9th, 2008,
at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Burlington Ontario.
This event is open to all, and we invite non-members to attend.
The ORLS will hold a Fall Membership Meeting at 1:30 p.m. on November 4th, 2007,
in Room 5 of the Royal Botanical Gardens, Burlington Ontario.
